Harnessing the Power of Community Partners
We've all had those days where we're one step ahead of our students and while all teachers are experts at "fake it 'till we make it", what if your students could access real experts right in your own community? With the power of technology, your community could even grow to include people in different states or countries! If you are interested in tapping into the endless power of community partners, bring your questions, ideas, and device! We'll connect with other educators, share ideas about community partners, and collaborate to create The Giant List of Southern Idaho Community Experts.

Behavior Basics: Helping Kids Act Better
Behavior basics: Helping Kids Act Better. Why do so many of our students have a hard time in the classroom? Challenging behavior affects everyone, not just the child who is pinching, stealing, or blurting out every other minute. We want more than anything to help our students reach their full potential but that can't happen when students are in the office or hallway because of chronic disruptive behavior. Participants in this session will learn the basic principles of behavior and how to make decisions that create positive learning environments for all kids. Learn how to recognize the principles of behavior in individual student behaviors or problem routines in your classroom. Then make decisions that will decrease the development of new problem behaviors to ensure your students learn better ways to meet their needs.

Intentional planning to Extend Language Development Throughout the Day
Shifts in language and learning standards have elevated expectations of students and teachers alike. It is clear that “English learner students need additional help and teachers need a great deal of support” (Goldenberg, 2013, p.5).

Education Northwest’s Framework for Intentional Planning Practice is a set of standards-based planning principles designed to elevate language practice and extend language development throughout the school day. This four step process coaches teachers to analyze their standards for language development opportunities. Further, these practices model effective scaffolding and formative assessment practice to ensure that students are rising to standards. This 80 minute session provides an overview of Intentional Planning Practice with a deeper dive into steps one and two. This session is designed for any educator that serves language learner students.

Misconceptions of Reinforcement
If you ever heard (or thought) the following about reinforcement, this session is for you!

"Reinforcement doesn't work"

"He shouldn't need reinforcement, he should just do what is asked"

"She can do it, she just won't"

Effective reinforcement is the most powerful tool of teaching, yet there is great misunderstanding about what it truly is and how to use it.

What is called "reinforcement" is many times the mis-use of a reward or privilege as either a "bribe" (quid pro quo) or a "lure" (an offer after the unwanted behavior). This session will clarify what effective reinforcement is and is not. The misuse of rewards can delay learning and make unwanted behavior worse!

CANCELLED: Beyond Batman: Using Graphic Novels to Teach Serious Subjects (Secondary)
When many of us think of graphic novels and comic books, we think of superheroes. In recent years there’s been an explosion in the publishing world: graphic novels have gone far beyond superheroes, and include nonfiction and fiction across genres and content areas. These books are engaging for proficient readers and support literacy for all readers. This hands-on session will explore the best recently published graphic novels, including nonfiction works for history, science, geography, and art classrooms. We’ll also look at multiple genres of fiction in graphic novel format, and see how they can provide access points and connections to ELA curriculum.

Relationship Building with Difficult Students
Limited Capacity filling up

Trying to make a real connection with difficult students and engage them in learning can drain our energy. We often wonder “Can I do this?” and if so, “Where do I even start?” Through stories, some science, examples, and reflection we will investigate the importance of relationships and why they are the cornerstone for everything we do with students. We will explore evidence-based practices for building relationships with challenging students. Finally, we will discuss some specific strategies to experiment with in the classroom. Participants will leave with ideas to take back and put into practice with all students right away.

Dual Credit Physical Science
Our session is for all dual credit instructors in Physical Science (Chemistry, Geology, and Physics).  If possible, come prepared to share an example of an assignment or activity that you do with your students that helps them to accomplish the objectives of the course, and helps you to know how well they learned and how you might help them better in the future.  Activities that target the general education objectives ii, iii, and iv (see below) for science will be our focus for our multi-disciplinary group.  One example that I recently learned from Steve Korecki is attached.  Please email files to Naysa Shepherd at nshepherd@csi.edu by Wednesday at 8:00 am if you would like printouts for the group.

If you are away from your office or computer and cannot bring an example, that’s no problem.  We will still value your participation and have plenty to discuss.

Below are the official Scientific Way of Knowing Student Learning Outcomes for Idaho General Education.  As mentioned above, I would like to focus on activities and assignments that target objectives ii, iii, and iv.

Scientific Ways of Knowing: Upon completion of a course in this category, a student is able to demonstrate at least four (4) of the following competencies.
i.                     Apply foundational knowledge and models of a natural or physical science to analyze and/or predict phenomena.
ii.                   Understand the scientific method and apply scientific reasoning to critically evaluate arguments.
iii.                 Interpret and communicate scientific information via written, spoken and/or visual representations.
iv.           Describe the relevance of specific scientific principles to the human experience.
v.            Form and test a hypothesis in the laboratory or field using discipline-specific tools and techniques for data collection and/or analysis.

Are questions more important than answers? Can students and educators really identify knowledge gaps and strengthen critical thinking skills by asking more questions rather than providing more answers? Learning research is finding that student curiosity increases, and that ownership of their own learning is strengthened when students learn to ask their own questions. Yet, the art of questioning is rarely taught in school. Let's explore a process known as the Question Formulation Technique (QTF). The QTF is a simple and rigorous technique appropriate for all learners in any educational setting. In one process, students practice three thinking abilities: divergent, convergent, and metacognitive thinking.

CANCELLED: Teaching Students How to Ask Their Own Questions
