Are questions more important than answers? Can students and educators really identify knowledge gaps and strengthen critical thinking skills by asking more questions rather than providing more answers? Learning research is finding that student curiosity increases, and that ownership of their own learning is strengthened when students learn to ask their own questions. Yet, the art of questioning is rarely taught in school. Let's explore a process known as the Question Formulation Technique (QTF). The QTF is a simple and rigorous technique appropriate for all learners in any educational setting. In one process, students practice three thinking abilities: divergent, convergent, and metacognitive thinking.
